
Kihon is the term in karate used for the basic techniques which are practiced as the basis for most martial arts. Kihon literally means "basics" or "fundamentals." Kihon is the practicing of these basic and fundamental techniques, but another key part of kihon is mastering the right attitude, mindset, and spirit of karate.
Kihon is practiced often, as a reminder of the basics, solidifying the karate foundation. A firm knowledge and understanding of kihon will help a karateka master more difficult skills. Kihon can be seen much like a pianist practicing scales and chords or a baseball player doing batting practice.
Different styles and forms of karate practice kihon differently. Some kihon may be practiced as repeated techniques on the floor or by practicing specific kihon kata. Other kihon may be implemented through combat practice, such as kicking and punching bags or dummies. Some kihon is practiced infrequently-- every few months or so. Other kihon is practiced daily. While kihon is necessary and universal to karate as a general idea, its interpretation is wide and varied.
